Full SuperMoon in Libra – April 7, 2020; 7:34 pm PDT
Astrology is the study of planets and their cycles. We know that each planet has a particular orbit length and that every time it comes around (appearing to circle us from our perspective on Earth) or interacts with another planet moving in the heavens, a specific type of energy is produced. Evolutionary astrologers, like me, believe that events happening in the sky, like planets combining their energy, bring a necessary evolutionary opportunity here on Earth and we can look back in time and see this happen again and again.
Now, we are in the midst of one of these evolutionary cycles. Just like during World War I, when Saturn and Pluto were combined, the soldiers were trapped in the trenches and fearful of the ‘poison’ that had been released into the air, we are confined to our houses and concerned about an airborne virus that can turn quite deadly. The circumstances are different, but the effect of the planetary energy is the same.
It’s in my nature to want to know the ‘why’ of things. This is one of the reasons that Evolutionary Astrology appeals to me. It is a branch of Western Natal Astrology that attempts to illuminate our soul’s intention in this lifetime by looking at certain patterns in the birth chart. Once we know what our soul intended to experience during this lifetime, we can better understand the situations and circumstances that have arisen in our lives. We get a sense of WHY we are here.
To understand the ‘why’ of the coronavirus we have to look at the archetypes of the two planets involved, Saturn and Pluto.
Pluto is the archetype of primordial energy. It is the Universal life force that impels all evolution and transformation. It represents the Underworld of our psyches which is a dark, mysterious, and sometimes terrifying place. It’s where we hide our Shadow selves and stuff all the scary and taboo thoughts, feelings, and traumas that we have experienced. It’s a part of ourselves that we adamantly deny existence to – just like astronomers deny the existence of Pluto as a planet. As the Lord of the Underworld, when transiting Pluto’s energy challenges our birth chart it asks us to descend into the depths of our psyches and face off with what we find there. A terrifying proposition, but…if we can get down into that scary place and really acknowledge what lies hidden there, we have the chance to understand it, accept it, and heal it, and that’s when true evolutionary transformation occurs.
Saturn is the archetype that represents the structures of our lives. It is the Matrix and provides foundation, but also limitation. It’s considered to be the planet of karma, not in the typical understanding of the word, but in a way of describing the process of dealing with the consequences of our choices and confronting our past.
These two planets come together in the sky periodically and ask that our Earthly structures be transformed. In our society that relates to concepts like borders, political parties and governments, banking systems, and every other type of structure we’ve put in place to give ourselves the ‘sense’ of security. I say ‘sense’ because the security these institutions bring is just an illusion. From a personal perspective, these two planets are asking us to dig deep into our psyches to see what constructs we’ve created in ourselves that need to be transformed. In order for transformation to occur, these constructs must be de-constructed.
That deconstruction is happening now, as Pluto and Saturn interact and are joined by Jupiter and Mars. Everything Jupiter touches, it expands and Mars is the white-hot fire that ignites a volatile situation. Mars entered the sign of Aquarius on March 30th and won’t change signs until mid-May. It is traveling through Aquarius along with Saturn and it’s this combination that is fueling the social restrictions we are experiencing. They travel together until mid-May and it’s likely that is when we will see the lifting of the restrictions on our movements. I hope we don’t have to wait that long, but the energy suggests it.
Mars in an air sign can disturb our mental state. In Aquarius, this can make us a bit more prone to worry, anxiety, and stress. If you have been noticing that your mind goes to darker places like this lately, this could be part of the reason. I normally try to steer clear of letting thoughts linger on darker things, but I believe that right now it’s important to pay attention to the dark thoughts and fears that arise in us. It’s also important to pay attention to what triggers our emotions. When we over-react to a situation, it’s a sign that there is energy suppressed around whatever is at the core of the issue. If you can recognize the trigger and follow the emotion down the wormhole with the intention of getting to the source of the trauma, then it becomes possible to recognize it, understand it, and begin to release the energy. That’s when healing happens.
The emergence of COVID-19 is a wake-up call and when it will end once and for all is dependent upon our willingness to dive deep and make changes to ourselves and to our societal structures. Hoping for things to go back to ‘normal’ is not the right mind set because where we have come from was not really working. From here we must look forward and set our minds on creating a new reality, one where we can revel in the higher vibration that is changing the Earth.
We start out the month with Venus moving into Gemini on April 3rd. She will spend an entire four months in this sign which is highly unusual and much longer than her normal four-week transit through a sign. This makes it important to pay attention to where this falls in your chart because Venus’ presence there will help us get reacquainted with the area of life where Gemini lies. If you know the house that has Gemini on the cusp (doorway) then this is the area of life that will be most affected by Venus’ time in Gemini. Venus will bring her sweetness, good fortune, and light into that part of your life. Creativity, pleasure, partnership will all be emphasized in a lovely way over the next four months. Venus doesn’t turn retrograde until May, but in April we can get a sense of what things may not be working for us in the area where Gemini influences our lives. We may be asked to make this part of our life more pleasant, more beautiful, or to use more creativity here. The Gemini parts of your chart are up for a big review and renewal over the next four months. Venus is retrograde in Gemini every 8 years so there is a resonance or echo through time that is brought by this transit. If you can think back to what was occurring for you in May/June 2012, you’ll get a sense of what this energy will bring.
Venus in Gemini is normally very busy, social, and interactive. It’s about networking and entertaining. With this energy we desire as much interaction with others as we can get. However, since Venus is going retrograde soon and entering the shadow time (slowing down) we will see things getting in the way of the interaction we desire. We are already experiencing this with varying restrictions put on us based on the state where we live. I believe we can expect more of this through April and so Venus in Gemini will support the video chat and online interactions that we’ve turned to. Venus in Gemini strongly relates to ‘talking’ about our relationships. It’s a wonderful time to share with your partner how you feel about them and to give little (or big) packages of love. We can take advantage of this time by improving our communication skills within relationships so that our partners know exactly where we stand and what we desire.
Also on April 3rd, Mercury makes a conjunction with Neptune. With this energy, we’re drawn to spiritual perspectives and activities. This is a perfect day for a detox (both physically and from technology), energy work, meditation, creativity, and it’s a time to be particularly aware of intuitive impressions, synchronicity, and Spiritual messages. Take the time to rest your brain. This is not a good day for details or decision-making. Be patient and flexible. Mercury moves out of the sign of Pisces and into Aries on April 10th. This will help to clear up muddled minds and give us all a better idea of ‘what to say’ and ‘how to say it’. Mercury in Aries is bolder and has clearer vision. Wait until then to commit to anything.
The biggest aspect of outer planets in 2020 occurs on April 4th and activates a trend that will be with us all year. Jupiter and Pluto combine their energy at 24 degrees Capricorn. Even though it’s at its strongest on April 4th, it’s likely we will feel the effects of the aspect for 10 days before and 10 days after.
This is the 1st of 3 times these planets come together in this way. The first time occurring early April, the second in late June/early July, and the third the second week of November right after the US elections. The energy generated in April will be the most dramatic, intense, and perhaps difficult. This is because new energy is being unleashed. It’s likely that we will become aware of issues as they emerge, and situations that weren’t clear before will crystalize. The 2nd and 3rd activations will be used to figure out how to handle what has been revealed.
It’s very important to pay attention during this time. Observe what is happening in your own life, what is happening in your country, and what is happening globally. Research and learn things if you are prompted to do that. This Pluto/Jupiter combination brings a concentration of power. Jupiter is typically very expansive and magnanimous, but in Capricorn it’s at its most cautious. It is possible that this combination can manifest as control and power happening in connection to fear or caution. Jupiter in Capricorn can also be very frugal. There’s an overlay or familiarity with Jupiter in Capricorn that we can see historically by looking back at 2008. Jupiter was in Capricorn during the financial/housing crisis that occurred then and we can see another financial situation building now. The energy of Jupiter conjunct Pluto in Capricorn is, in part, representative of the economic contraction and tightening that will be a theme for this year. And, because this is the 1st of 3 times this occurs in 2020, it’s important to think now about using caution in connection to our own finances.
The sign of Capricorn is about institutions, so it represents the government, the banking industry, and other long-established institutions that have been created to provide a level of security for society. With Jupiter and Pluto combined like this, we will see how those institutions are actually behaving and whether they are a benefit or a detriment to our way of life. From a personal perspective, it’s important that we pay attention, be conservative with our resources, cautious in long-term planning, and consider postponing travel. Caution and delay may be key words during this year. We are already seeing a huge amount of restriction of our movements. This will reveal some truths. It brings to our awareness the power that is happening behind the scenes and also helps us get in touch with the power that we have personally. It may feel like we have less of this right now, but we still can make our own choices, even within the limitations imposed on us.
The Full Moon in Libra happens on April 7th at 7:34pm PDT and activates a part of the sky that is totally unoccupied by other planets. From a symbolic perspective, this Full Moon brings light to something that has been ignored, neglected, or hidden. As a result, our focus may move to something new. Don’t be concerned about the need to shift onto something different. Don’t fight it, just go with the flow because the Full Moon is trying to get you to see something you haven’t seen before or bring you some insight.
This is the strongest SuperMoon this year and happens on a very busy day astrologically. This Full Moon energy is all about balance, relationships, and highlights equality, fairness, and justice. We have an opportunity to see and take into consideration how our choices affect our loved ones. There’s a willingness to compromise with this Full Moon.
There may be some drama and something may be revealed at this time. The energy is trying to show us areas where things are not equal or fair. There will be lots of discussion and debate because Libra loves to talk about issues with the ultimate goal of coming to a compromise. From a personal perspective, be prepared to negotiate with the intention of finding the win-win in a situation, especially related to relationship or familial issues. Just make sure that what’s important to you doesn’t get overlooked in the larger discussion.
Also, on April 7th, Mars in Aquarius has a challenging interaction with Uranus in Taurus. This is very stimulating and has the potential to be volatile. Globally, this could manifest as sudden and unexpected developments. There will be a twist in the narrative coming from our ‘leaders’ that is surprising. On a personal level, it’s important to stay flexible and spontaneous because you could be pulled from one thing to another unexpectedly. The challenge with this aspect is that it is forming in fixed signs – Taurus and Aquarius. Fixed signs are not known for their ability to shift quickly and adapt to a new path or way of being. There is rigidity and stubbornness which can result in something breaking. Be cautious about holding a position no matter what and in spite of evidence to the contrary. If issues come up, try to get to the place of agreeing to disagree rather than coming to blows. Try to expect the unexpected (an oxymoron for sure) but it’s the best way to navigate this energy if you can do it. Because of the stimulating nature of this combination, this can be a day when we get a lot done or make major progress on a project.
Uranus always brings change, but it’s with a purpose and ideally that purpose is to give us more freedom. So, think about how to make the changes work for you in a positive way. Uranus is also good at revealing something new so we may be presented with options we’d never considered before.
The combination of the Full Moon and Mars square Uranus will be intense, volatile, highly emotional, and likely will bring some drama. Keep yourself calm and grounded as best you can and try not to overreact. This is not a time for rash decisions or action. Give yourself at least 24 hours before acting on an issue.
On the same day, April 7th, Mercury connects with the Jupiter/Pluto combination. Mercury is all about communication so this essentially brings a megaphone to broadcast whatever Jupiter and Pluto are revealing to us individually and globally. Mercury combined with Pluto helps us speak about our deep secrets and that can be very therapeutic. It’s a bit like truth serum. We may purge our deep and private thoughts to someone we trust. Even if you’re only doing this in your own mind and to just yourself, it will still be very powerful. Mercury/Pluto can also be about getting information or facts that can help us manage fear or anxiety. Mercury and Jupiter together, bring a collaborative type of energy. It’s very forward moving and positive.
On April 11th, Mercury moves out of the sign of Pisces. While I will miss this very woo-woo energy, Mercury in Pisces can contribute to confusion and if you are extremely sensitive, a bombardment of energetic input which can be tiring. Mercury moving into Aries will help stabilize our minds and allow for clearer thinking and easier decision-making. Communication of all types becomes clearer and more direct. This helps us speak up and be more assertive with what we want.
On the same day, Mercury will form an agreeable aspect with Saturn that helps us be productive. Mercury and Saturn together tend to be about research and fact-checking. It’s about completion after all due diligence is done. This is a good time to sign documents, make agreements, do some long-range planning, make travel arrangements, or create a timeline. It tends to crystalize thought processes. This combination brings us the ability to see what is possible in the future and helps us release the worry of what is in the past.
April 14th and 15th, the Sun moves into a challenging aspect with Pluto. A Sun/Pluto combination brings up issues of power and we can expect during this time to get some lessons on the right use of power. Unfortunately, those lessons usually come by witnessing or experiencing the wrong use of power. It also speaks to our personal power and decisions about what we want to fight for in our lives. During this time, it’s also possible to experience power struggles with someone in your life. In astrology this is a ‘square’ aspect and those usually put obstacles into our path with the need to learn a lesson before moving forward. If you do find yourself in this situation, hold your ground and let whatever is meant to happen, happen. There can be great transformation and rebirth when these planets come together. Birthing is always painful, but the end result is worth it.
The Sun squares Jupiter on the next day and that brings positive energy. During this time, we may hear about more successful treatments or protocols that can be used to fight the pandemic. From a personal perspective, this combination can help us get back in touch with a purpose that might have been put on hold in order to deal with our changing lives and societies. It helps us see the Big Picture and get back in touch with it. We grow by stretching ourselves and moving outside our comfort zones. This energy is an invitation to do that in whatever way is possible for you.
