Super New Moon in Libra – October 16, 2020; 12:30 pm PDT
We start off the second half of October with a lovely combination of Jupiter and Neptune. These are two large planetary bodies that bring big feelings, big dreams, expansive hopes, and wishes. There is a dreamy, imaginative quality to this energy and it’s quite creative. It’s a bit speculative as well, so you may be wondering about what might happen given certain scenarios and options.
Idealism will also be strongly stimulated which brings to mind the ideal world that we would all like to live in. If we use this energy to remind ourselves of that rather than focusing on what is less than ideal, we can begin to pull it to us. What we create in the real world may not be as perfect as the ideal but we can get closer to it using this energy.

The imagination component of this energy can lead to profound inspiration or intuitive leaps, especially related to artistic or creative projects. There is also a huge intuitive and metaphysical element to this aspect. It’s a great day to spend time in a quiet space, meditating, or connecting to Source in whatever way resonates with you. Pay attention to dreams and downloads over the next few days. Work on that creative project that has languished over the last few weeks.
On the same day, October 12th, Mercury interacts nicely with Venus. Venus’ influence over Mercury will be very positive and really helps ease any challenging conversations or decisions that need to be made. Coming together in relationship will result in warmth and the creation of a true connection and deep understanding. It’s not a perfect aspect because Mercury is stationing retrograde, but it does bring a sense of hope and ease – two things sorely needed right now.
On October 13th, Mercury begins its retrograde process. Slow down, communicate very clearly, and double check details. There’s not a lot you can do to force things through during Mercury retrograde, so just be patient. If things get stuck early in the week, don’t force them. Wait until Saturday and you’ll find that the energy eases up.
Also on October 13th, we have highly energized Mars and the Sun combining their energy. Generally, this combination will produce an air of tension, frustration, and annoyance that things aren’t working right. It’s a prickly, aggravated, agitating vibe that has no outlet for the extra energy. You may also be prevented from taking action that you want to take so this is not a great day to take on a challenge. Instead, use this energy to plan for the future or to deal with unfinished business or projects. Slow down, don’t push yourself as this energy is also a bit accident prone.
October 15th, we have a very intense interaction between the Sun in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn. This is an aspect about power. It’s about dealing with your own power or with those who you believe have power over you. There may be a clash between your energy and another’s. There’s also a quality of pushing or wanting to make a change. This energy can highlight situations of the right (and wrong) use of power, both personally and globally. You may be made aware of areas in your life where you haven’t accepted your own power or abdicated power to others. The best use of this energy is to think about what you want to clear out, detox, or purify in your life and begin the process.
There is a strong therapeutic undertone to this energy. Pluto is very good at revealing true motivations so you may be asking/pondering some big questions. You can get insight into what makes someone else tick or what is really driving you and your decisions. There is also the potential to for awareness of how a trauma from your past impacts your current choices. Understanding that can be incredibly empowering and healing even if it means recognizing and experiences the pain of remembering. Taking time for reflection is very important on this day.
The energy of the Sun square Pluto is preparation for the New Moon in Libra which happens on October 16th at 12:30 pm PDT. This is the closest SuperMoon of the year, which can cause some extreme weather patterns and/or seismic activity.
Considering the overall effect of the 2020 energy, it’s no surprise that this New Moon has some other complications attached to it. Whenever we have a lunation in the sign of Libra, we become more focused on the ideas of equality, fairness, and justice for all things. These are beautiful concepts and the lack of them has been highlighted throughout this year. However, because this New Moon makes a very tight and challenging aspect to both Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn, it’s likely to bring up heightened awareness of the disparity between the ideal we have imagined and the old systems and structures that are so deeply entrenched into our society. There can be the sense of fighting against these structures in order to create that ideal. Collectively and globally we can quite easily imagine what this looks like because we are experiencing it daily as we watch our systems breakdown.
Keep in mind that this is also happening at the micro or personal level. You may have a desire for equality and fairness in your own life but come up against old patterning or conditioning – unconscious stuff – that holds you back.
There will be a strong sense of push-pull at the New Moon – wanting to start anew, to transform as Pluto is asking us to do, but Saturn pulls us back to the past, history, and tradition. One of the big questions facing us will be what part of the past, history, and tradition are we ready to step away from and what part can go forward with us.
There will be a lot of confusion around this New Moon because Venus, the ruler of the New Moon, is directly opposite Neptune. As hard as we try to make a plan or begin something new, the energy will get muddled. We’re faced with the scale of the task seeming too big, we feel overwhelmed, don’t know where to start, or focus on the details rather than the big picture.
This New Moon will bring the realization that in order to survive we must create new structures and systems. That’s a daunting task and makes me feel tired just thinking about it. Still, that’s what the Universe is asking us to do. Imagine Saturn in Capricorn as this crochety old guy. He’s tall, bony, and a bit gnarly. He is all that we find familiar – the status quo – what we have grown up knowing will always be a part of our lives. To many, he represents security – that which is known.
Our Saturn Guy is bent over from the weight of the collective angst, a bit gimpy in his stride, and one leg drags behind him. Clinging to that leg are the millions of souls who are unwilling to let go of the old systems and structures. Slowly, one labored step at a time, he inches toward the edge of a cliff. You can see the inevitable. The natural – human – inclination is to rush forward and try to prevent the fall from happening. But, if we do that, if we pretend that the old systems are still viable and keep trying to kick start them, then we just make the required transition and transformation more difficult.
Intention follows attention – focus on the new structures and systems, not on the gasping death throes of the old ones. As we get closer to the Winter Solstice on December 21st, Jupiter and Saturn will combine their energy at 0 degrees of Aquarius. This is the beginning of new 20, 200, and 800-year cycles.
Use the New Moon to set intentions for yourself and for the world, but take time to really clarify what those intentions need to be to help you develop the life that is in your best and highest good. Also, recognize that while your intentions will be ultra-strong with this energy, they may unfold more slowly than you think they should.
